Or maybe you might have completed a yoga class, and you felt better not only in outer terms but internally too? You’re not imagining it; it’s your subtle body.

Our physical body is composed of bones, skin, and blood, but yoga tells us we have another anatomy. Welcome to your subtle body (or Sukshma Sharira). At Maa Shakti Yog Bali, we believe understanding this inner energy system is one of the most transformative aspects of yoga practice. It is the energy body that underpins the physical body. Knowing about the subtle body (Chakras, Nadis, and Prana) is like having the instruction manual to our inner energy.

What is the Subtle Body?

Let’s first understand what we mean by the subtle body. In yoga, we aren’t simply physical beings. We are layered.

Our thoughts, emotions, and energy are housed in the subtle body. It’s the intermediary between the physical and the soul. When we hear about holistic health, we are referring to this energy body. When the subtle body is blocked, we can feel lethargic, nervous, or sick. If it’s clear, we are “in the zone.”

1. Prana: Life Force

Also Read: Fasting and Yoga: Ancient Practices for Modern Health

Everything in the subtle body has its foundation in Prana. You may have heard your yoga instructor talk about this while practicing a breathing exercise.

The word “prana” translates as “breath” in English, but it is so much more than air. It is the life force energy that gives us life. It is that spark that makes our heart beat and our brain function.

How Do We Receive Prana?

We don’t receive Prana only through inhalation. We receive it from:

The Food We Eat: Fresh, whole foods (sattvic foods) are high in prana.

The Sun: Its rays are a huge source of Prana.

Our Environment: Being outdoors helps us to “charge our prana batteries.”

Breath (Pranayama): This is the most obvious way for us to control and increase energy.

As we practice, when we work on Pranayama (breath), we are not just cleaning our lungs; we are cleaning our nadis so that prana can access all cells.

2. Nadis: The Energetic Highways

If Prana is the electricity, then Nadis are the wires.

“Nadi” translates from the Sanskrit word “nad,” which means “flow” or “vibration.” The ancient scriptures say there are more than 72,000 Nadis in the body! This may seem like a lot to take in, but all we need to focus on are the three main “highways” that determine our state of being.

The Three Main Nadis

Sushumna Nadi (The Central Channel): This is the most important Nadi. It runs straight down the center of the spine from the bottom of the spine to the crown of the head. In yoga we seek to open this central channel to allow the flow of prana upwards.

Ida Nadi (The Left Channel): This channel is lunar energy. It is cool, feminine, intuitive, and creative energy. It terminates in the left nostril and is connected to the right side of the brain (the creative side). When Ida is balanced, we will feel relaxed and meditative.

Pingala Nadi (The Right Channel): This is solar energy. It is hot, male, rational, and active. It exits the right nostril and goes to the left brain (logic). If Pingala is more active, we are strong, motivated, and outgoing.

Finding Balance

Sometimes we can be “lopsided.” Have you felt too “solar” and restless, angry, or hot? Or too “lunar”—sad, sluggish, or dreamy? Yoga asanas and alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) help us equalize these two to allow energy to flow through the Sushumna, resulting in meditative calmness.

3. Chakras: Our Energy Centers

Also Read: The Science of Auras and How Yoga Affects Your Energetic Field

And now we come to the most well-known aspect of the subtle body: the chakras.

The crossing of the Nadis results in vortexes of energy called “Chakras” (meaning “wheels”). There are many chakras in the body (in our palms and the soles of our feet, for instance), but we’re interested in the seven major chakras that run down the length of our spine.

1. Muladhara, or Root Chakra: Our Basis

This chakra works as the base or we can also say the foundation, which can be felt in the base of our spine (root chakra), this links us to the color red, which is somehow connected to a sense of security and stability. We feel rooted and provided to handle anything life throws at us when we are in balance in this chakra. In times of doubt or fear, mountain pose (Tadasana) or a squat (Malasana) can help us remember to be safe.

2) Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) Creativity Flow

Located below the navel is the second chakra (sacral); this chakra is full of vibrant orange colors and houses creativity and all emotions, sensuality, and creativity. When this is balanced, we are flexible, creative, and able to enjoy healthy and harmonious relationships. We can open this region and free up any emotion held in this area through hip-opening poses such as pigeon pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana).

3. Manipura’s Solar Plexus Chakra: Power Center

The stomach chakra, also known as the solar plexus, as suggested by the name itself is located above the abdomen and is denoted by the rich yellow color. It is the source of our self-assurance, strength, determination, and intuition. We feel in power, self-assured, and capable of realizing the goals we have when we are in balance. The fire within can be stoked by strengthening poses like warrior III or boat (navasana).

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata): The Love Bridge

The heart chakra, or Anahata, is situated in the middle of the chest and serves as a link between our spirit (upper) and physical being (lower). The core of forgiveness, love, and compassion is the green heart chakra. An open heart chakra enables us to give and receive love freely and to have compassion towards others. This area can easily be opened by working with some poses such as camel pose (Ustrasana) or bridge pose.

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): Our Truthful Voice

The throat chakra, which is recognized by the blue color, is the focal point of clear self-expression and communication. We may hear the things and opinions and every other thing and speak without passing judgment on the voices of others when we have an open throat. By performing neck-stretching and neck-engaging poses like shoulder stand or fish pose, we may balance the physical and energetic health of our throats.

6. Ajna, or Third Eye Chakra: Our Inner Vision

The indigo Third Eye Chakra is located in the space between the eyebrows. It is responsible for our intuition and creativity and is our “inner eye.” When in balance, we are able to perceive the greater context (the forest) and draw on our intuition. In order to calm the mind and awaken this center, we find stillness in Child’s Pose (Balasana), with our forehead on the ground to stimulate the brow point.

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): Universe

And at the top of the head, we find the crown chakra. This chakra is connected to the colors violet or pure white and is our connection to the universe. When we are balanced in this center, we feel at one with all and at ease. Transcendence is the nature of this chakra, so we often invoke this center in the deep release of Savasana (corpse pose) or in a seated, silent meditation.

The Effect of Prana Flow on Our Life

We may ask, “So what does this have to do with my flexibility?”

Well, our physical body and our subtle body are interlinked. We know that when we are stressed (solar plexus/heart), we have stomach issues or tightness across our chest, right? This is the subtle body impacting the physical body.

When we have blockages to the flow of Prana, it’s like a kink in a water hose. The water (life force) isn’t moving, and the plant (you!) gets sick.

Physical blockages are tension, pain, or sickness.

Psychic blockages show up as negative thinking or “foggy headedness.”

Emotional blockages show up as holding onto past emotional trauma, such as holding grudges.

When we practice yoga, we’re not only stretching our muscles but also “unkinking the hose.” We move and breathe to help the energy flow and feel more alive.

What We Can Do To Balance Our Subtle Body

Also Read: How to Prepare for Your First Yoga Teacher Training in Bali

It doesn’t take a yogi to play with our subtle body. Here are some ways we can start:

1. Mindful Breathing (Pranayama)

The easiest way to move Prana is through our breath. Sama Vritti (Equal Breathing). Breath for four counts in, four counts out. This will balance Ida and Pingala nadis immediately.

2. Earth Grounding

If we feel overwhelmed and nervous (unbalanced root chakra), we can walk around outside barefoot. Being in contact with the frequency of the earth helps to “drain” the frenzy and centers us.

3. Chanting and Sound

Each of the chakras has a “seed sound” or “bija” mantra.

Root: LAM

Sacral: VAM

Solar Plexus: RAM

Heart: YAM

Throat: HAM

Third Eye: OM

Crown: Silence

The vibration of these sounds will clear the energy of the particular chakra.

4. Intentional Yoga Sequences

As we get on our mats, we can make an intention. If we are feeling tight, we can open our hearts. If we feel weak, we can concentrate on strengthening our core. We can focus on feeling the energy as we move into the pose.

Bringing it All Together

The journey with the subtle body is for life. We don’t “balance” our chakras and then be done with them; it’s an ongoing balance.

With the knowledge of prana, nadis, and chakras, yoga is no longer just exercise. It becomes a journey of discovery. We understand that we can change our inner state. We are not at the mercy of our moods and our stress; we control our own energy.

The next time you practice yoga, try to close your eyes. Rather than feel your hamstrings, feel the vibration in your fingertips. Rather than hear the breath, feel the energy up your back. We are light, vibration, and possibility.

Did this blog give you a bit more insight into your practice? Let us know what chakra you are focusing on this week!
