Now close your eyes and take a big, deep breath. Now, we don’t want you to say “sigh” anymore; we want you to do something a little strange.

Just laugh.

Even when you’re embarrassed to do it, even when it’s a “ha ha ha” or a small laugh. What does your chest feel like? A little lighter? A bit warmer? At Maa Shakti Yog Bali, we believe that true spiritual growth is not only found in silence and meditation but also in moments of joy, connection, and heartfelt laughter. Laughter Yoga beautifully embodies this philosophy.

We have been yoga instructors for quite a while and have spent a lot of time in quiet rooms that are also intense, deep, and serious. We are not saying there’s anything wrong with a slow, candlelit Vinyasa flow; we love a slow Vinyasa. As we walked through this quest for wellness in our modern world, however, we noticed an important element lacking—joy. Unmixed, purest joy, you shake your belly.

It led us to a practice that fundamentally changed our understanding of what it means to be “spiritual.” This is referred to as “laughter yoga.”

So today, we will really get deep into this beautiful, goofy, so super healing practice! We will cover the mental health benefits of laughter, the physics behind it, and the ultimate question: Is laughter a legitimate spiritual practice?

So, what is laughter yoga?

The term “Laughter Yoga” or “Hasya Yoga” may sound like a punchline if you haven’t heard of it before. You may be imagining people attempting to adopt a challenging posture whilst cracking jokes. It is, however, much simpler—and much more intentional—than that, however.

Laughter Yoga was started in 1995 by a medical doctor from India, Dr. Madan Kataria, and consists of a unique exercise program that involves unconditional laughter along with yogic breathing (Pranayama).

Here is the clinching line: It is not based on humor, on jokes, or on comedy.

Rather, laughter is a group initiative that we start as a physical activity. Looking at each other and playing with the inner child creates that fake, that simulated laugh, but then it turns into real, contagious, infectious giggles.

The golden rule of Laughter Yoga is “Your body cannot tell the difference between laughter and real laughter. Both produce the exact same happy, feel-good chemicals.

The Surprising Health Benefits of Laughter Yoga

Also Read: The Science of Auras and How Yoga Affects Your Energetic Field

Now, let’s start talking about what happens in your body and mind when you decide to do it on purpose—luckily, we don’t have to get too deep into the spiritual side of things yet. Laughter is a real science, known as “gelotology,” and the science of laughter says that a daily laugh is a natural medicine.

1. Provides instant stress relief and cortisol reduction.

The brain turns off the stress chemicals (such as adrenaline, cortisol, etc.) as soon as you laugh. Meanwhile, it triggers your brain to release endorphins, your body’s natural feel-good chemicals. It is a completely natural, rapid relief from anxiety that works.

2. A Boosted Immune System

Negative thoughts are expressed in chemical reactions that can introduce additional stress into your body and decrease immunity. Laughter releases, however, signaling molecules that combat stress and disease. It stimulates your immune system to make antibodies and activate your natural killer cells for a massive immune system upgrade.

3. This will give you some unexpected exercise.

Can you recall something you laughed so hard at that you were so sore the next day? That’s because healthy laughter is an outstanding mindful breathing exercise. It tightens abdominal muscles, increases heart and lung activity, and brings new blood up into the body. Dr. Kataria states that 10 minutes of hearty laughter is the same amount of time spent on a rowing machine as 30 minutes!

Moving Beyond the Physical: Humor as a Spiritual Practice

But now, let’s talk about the large elephant in the room. People tend to think of a “spiritual practice” as a silent, meditative posture in which someone sits perfectly still, recites ancient mantras, or reads sacred texts. Spirituality is sometimes considered to be quiet, serious, and solemn.

Who said enlightenment has to be dark?

If spirituality is about connectivity, being in the moment, and going beyond the self, then perhaps the quickest route we can take is laughter. Laughter yoga and humor should be placed on your spiritual altar because …

1. It eliminates the ego completely.

The ego is a lover of seriousness. Prefers to preserve its image, to worry about what others think, to be in control. It’s a lot about being able to look in someone’s eye, make eye contact, and make a fool of yourself by faking a laugh when you’re in a room.

Laughter yoga requires you to put your ego aside. Focusing on how cool or dignified you must appear is a huge space of authentic self-acceptance that you open when you stop doing it. My friend, that is nothing but spiritual freedom!

2. It Anchors You in the Present Moment

Consider how you felt when you had uncontrollable fits of laughter. Did you have food concerns? Looking back on an uncomfortable conversation from 3 years ago?

Of course not.

It’s impossible to laugh deeply and think simultaneously. You have to be there for laughter. It will get you to focus on the present moment, which is a great meditation tool!

3. It creates a strong sense of connection to others

This is the world we live in today, and in our digital age, it’s difficult to find real human connection. We wear masks and filter our image. Laughter yoga is a more efficient icebreaker than any game has ever been.

When you share a moment of vulnerability or a moment of joyful laughter, your souls will touch. It reminds us that we are all human beings with the same heart despite our various backgrounds, politics, and beliefs. It fosters compassion, empathy, and unity consciousness.

How to Practice Laughter Yoga at Home

Also Read: Yoga: A Journey Across Continents and Centuries

Even if you’re not in a formal class, you can begin to reap the rewards of this practice. Laughter yoga can be introduced into your everyday holistic wellness routine in a simple and convenient manner in your home.

Shifting Your Perspective: Joy is Your Birthright

For those who are in a difficult time in their lives now, the very notion of trying to laugh may seem insensitive or even impossible. We want to remember that feeling. Laughter yoga is about not trying to be happy at all times or ignoring pain.

It is rather an acceptance that in this world where there is much burden, there is joy that we can choose to have. It is a type of emotional toughness. Your decision to laugh says to the universe, “This may be difficult right now, but my spirit will not be broken.”

The divine is perceived as playful, fun, and light in many spiritual traditions. Brainstorm the laughing Buddha or the jolly monkey business of Krishna. They help us not to be caught up in the drama of this world.

Final Thoughts: Take Your Joy Seriously

As you leave your mat and leave your day behind, we ask you to be on the lookout for opportunities to be light. Go on a news fast for an hour. Look for something that will bring a smile to your face! Let yourself have a bit of fun, let yourself be a bit silly, let yourself be a bit playful, and let yourself be joyful.

Humor is not a hindrance to spiritual life; it is the essence of it. Laughter Yoga is the art of tuning your instrument; it’s the music of the soul.

What about you? Have you tried laughter yoga? Do you enjoy your spiritual practices? We would be delighted to hear your opinion on the comments below!

In the meantime, breathe, stretch, and laugh!
