When we say that, we feel like we’re in the company of others. This practice even has a term: doomscrolling. The other way around, many of us have heard of the soothing effect of the mind through meditation, but what is its explanation?

Today, let’s sit together and look at the real phenomena that are going on in our brains during doomscrolling vs. meditating. As yoga and meditation teachers for years, this is one of the most common questions we get asked in class: Why does scrolling make me feel worse? Why does meditation make me feel better? Let’s explain in a friendly manner.

So what is doomscrolling?

In the words of other people, doomscrolling is the practice of continuously reading negative information, reading bad news, and reading anxiety-inducing social media posts, even when it makes us feel bad. After one more post, one more headline, and one more video, we tell ourselves we’ll put it down, but somehow, we can’t.

Well, it’s not our fault really. We have a built-in mechanism that focuses on threats/danger that has been around for thousands of years… survival. Social media and news-based applications are aware of this too, and they are made to keep us engaged by appealing to this instinct.

Why Doomscoping Harms Our Brains

Let’s have a look at the engine. There are several things that happen in our brain and nervous system when we doomscroll:

1. Dopamine makes us addicted.

Each swipe to a different post triggers a release of dopamine in our brain, the “reward” chemical. It is the same chemical that plays a role in other addictive activities. All the uncertainty about the next thing is that it’s a shock. Will it be a shock? Something upsetting? Something funny?) keeps us coming back for more, similar to a slot machine.

2. Cortisol levels rise.

Our brain’s alarm system, the amygdala, is activated as we eat bad news or content. This releases our primary stress hormone, which is cortisol. In time, high cortisol can impact our sleep, digestion, mood, and even our immune system.

3. The nervous system remains in “fight or flight.”

Our sympathetic nervous system remains on constantly when we “doomscroll.” This is our conscious side that activates fight-or-flight. Our body has the sense of being threatened because it is constantly absorbing stressful content, even if we’re sitting in bed.

4. Our attention lapses.

Repeatedly scrolling trains our brain to look for short, choppy chunks of information. This can make it more difficult to concentrate on longer work activities, read a book, or even sit through a conversation without checking our phones over time.

The result? We go home feeling anxious, overstimulated, and mentally clouded, even though we weren’t physically exhausted.

Now, let’s take a look at meditation.

Also Read: Top 5 Yoga Teachers Training Programs in Bali

This is the opposite of doomscrolling. If we can sit quietly, concentrate on breathing, and let thoughts arise and pass without chasing them, some wonderful things begin to happen in our brain.

1. The parasympathetic nervous system replaces the sympathetic system.

Meditation is a way to engage our rest and digest system (the parasympathetic nervous system). This is the opposite reaction to ‘fight or flight.” Our breathing becomes deeper and slower, our heart rate becomes slower, and our body is given the signal that it can relax.

2. Cortisol levels drop.

Meditation has been associated with reduced cortisol levels, thus decreasing the amount of stress in our system. This is one of the primary reasons why meditation is recommended for relieving anxiety and stress.

3. The amygdala relaxes.

Recall that alarm we talked about earlier? Over time, regular meditation has been shown to reduce the reactivity of the amygdala. This is a reduction of reactiveness to stress and small causes of stress in everyday life.

4. The prefrontal cortex gets stronger.

This is the area of our mind that makes decisions, helps us concentrate, and controls our emotions. Meditation increases the link between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, allowing us to think instead of react.

There is the possibility of increased gray matter density. There is some evidence that regular meditation can enhance the size of gray matter in parts of the brain that are associated with memory, self-awareness, and compassion. To put it simply, meditation is not only calming, but it may also be changing our brains for the better.

For those looking to develop a more consistent foundation in yoga, breathwork, and meditation, structured learning can provide a deeper understanding of these practices. A 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Bali, for example, can offer an immersive environment to explore meditation alongside asana, pranayama, and yogic philosophy.

Doomscrolling vs Meditation: A Quick Comparison

Doomscrolling

Meditation

Nervous system

Activates fight-or-flight

Activates rest-and-digest

Stress hormone (cortisol)

Increases

Decreases

Attention span

Shortens over time

Strengthens over time

Emotional reactivity

Increases

Decreases

How we feel afterward

Anxious, drained, foggy

Calm, clear, grounded

When you look at it like this, it’s easy to see how we feel so differently after each activity, even though they may only take 10 or 15 minutes per day.

How to get out of the ‘doomscrolling’ and into the ‘meditation’ mindset.

Also Read: Sattvic Foods for Mental Clarity: A Practical Guide

This sounds great, but how do we really make the transition when Facebook is so addictive to scroll through? What can we do, as a group, to be simple and helpful?

1. Start small.

There is no need for us to meditate for 1 hour immediately. Just a couple minutes of concentrated breathing can start to turn our nervous system from stress to rest.

2. Replace the trigger.

Understand in which situations we tend to reach for our phone the first thing in the morning, before bed, on a break, etc., and begin to take a few mindful breaths in place of our phone.

3. Try a body scan.

Close our eyes, and slowly bring our attention to each part of the body from our toes to the top of our head. This little practice helps us out of our minds and into the here and now.

4. Breathe to train yourself to focus on the breath.

When we see ourselves reaching for the phone to make calls, we can take 3 slow, deep breaths first. This is the small space that can be just enough to interrupt the automatic scroll reflex.

5. Make pockets during the day that are free of phones.

Just dedicating our last 20 minutes and our first 20 minutes of the day to being phone-free can make a huge difference in how our nervous system feels throughout the day.

Give Ourselves Some Grace

It’s a normal reaction to the way we are designed and the way that we interact with technology to be engaged in doomscrolling and not feel bad about it, but just recognize that doomscrolling is affecting our minds and bodies, and we can offer ourselves other support tools, like meditating, to restore ourselves to a state of balance.

When we pause and choose not to pick up our cell phones for a few minutes, we can begin creating more space for calm, focused awareness. This simple principle is central to practices shared through Maa Shakti Yog Bali, where meditation becomes less about escaping everyday life and more about learning how to meet it with greater awareness.

Next time you find yourself grabbing for your device, remember to take a little time to pause, take a breath, and think about whether this is the best thing to do right now or if a few minutes of quiet awareness would help you more than picking up your device.

And your mind will thank you for it!

Doomscrolling can leave us anxious, overstimulated, and mentally drained, while meditation creates space for calm and awareness.
