You soon find yourself crying and sobbing.

If it’s happened to you, take a deep breath. One, you’re not the first. Secondly, you’re not at all the issue.

This is a common occurrence in yoga practice and teaching. In fact, the crying during meditation is one of the most natural and healing things that your mind and body can do. However, given that all of us think of meditation as instant peace and serenity, many of us would be surprised or even frightened to notice that we are crying as we sit still.

Today let’s discuss why we cry during mindfulness practices, what they are doing to our mind and body, and how we can gently accompany each other through these powerful moments.

There is a big myth about meditation.

As we begin our mindfulness journey, many of us think that meditation is going to replace our thinking. We believe that we will sit comfortably, let go of our minds, and feel complete inner peace from the moment we sit.

Meditation is not only for relaxation, but it is also a mirror as well.

We’re always busy in our everyday lives. There’s always a constant hustle and bustle of work, family responsibilities, digital notifications, and too many chores. In our crowded lives, we tend to go against our emotions. We try to put our feelings aside to get along in our busy lives. When stress, sadness, or frustration arises, we push it down to get on with life.

The yoga mat and the silence turn off the noise when we step onto it and sit in silence. We have come to a halt. So, when our mind quiets, all our suppressed stuff comes up. Those tears are nothing more than pent-up emotions being released.

There are five reasons why we cry during meditation that have to do with the mind-body connection.

Learning about the science of crying and the energy that can arise from it can help you feel much more solid when tears appear on the mat. Let’s take a look at five key reasons for this emotional breakthrough.

1. The nervous system finally gears up.

We live in a world today in which most of us spend our days in a subtle mode of fight-or-flight (primed by our sympathetic nervous system). We’re overwhelmed with deadlines and endless to-dos, and we’re on high alert.

Deep breathing exercises (pranayama) or guided meditation activates our parasympathetic nervous system, also referred to as the “rest and digest” nervous system.

Our nervous system tells us, “Hey, we are safe right now; our heart rate has slowed, and our muscles are relaxed.” When the body is feeling safe, it relaxes its protective armor. The quick change of one’s physiological state can also invite a physical release in the form of tears.

2. Emotional and physical tension and emotional storage of energy.

Yoga and somatic therapy remind us of the fact that the body remembers what the mind forgets. We carry stress in our bodies in very ‘physical’ ways, such as tight shoulders, a tight jaw, tight hips, etc.

Many yoga postures that open the hips (such as pigeon pose) or the heart (backbends) open the body where we carry emotional tension. As we move into silent meditation, that physical release is a release in the emotional realm. Tears are literally a stress that is leaving the body.

3. A Change from “Doing” to “Being”

We’re constantly in “doing” mode all day long. We perform, solve problems, and handle our lives. Meditation calls us to the state of pure ‘being.’

It’s a transformation that is uncommon for most of us and powerful enough to let go of our daily routine and be present with ourselves. It’s a transformation that is uncommon for most of us and powerful enough to let go of our daily routine and be present with ourselves. For those looking to explore this shift more deeply, a 100 hour yoga teacher training in Bali can provide an immersive environment to develop mindfulness, breath awareness, and a more conscious yoga practice. This great sense of radical self-acceptance can deeply affect us, often leading to tears of relief, gratitude, and self-compassion.

4. Suppressed grief and trauma processing

Grieving is not always linear and does not always have a clear, definite end date. We can be carrying around unprocessed losses, old heartbreaks, and past disappointments without even realizing it.

In quiet contemplation, the inner screens that protect us from ourselves fall away. Unprocessed emotions come to the surface. When we cry while mindful, we give our inner self an opportunity to grieve, to work through, and to heal without judgment.

5. Pure spiritual awe is experienced.

Not all tears we shed at meditation are tears of sadness or pain! At times, we have moments of tears of joy, tears of connection, and tears of great understanding.

As we continue to practice, we may experience a sudden moment of beautiful unity with the world around us, maybe a moment of some kind of gratitude for being alive. These moments of intense vibrations can be so overwhelming and so beautiful that our bodies release tears.

How to deal with tears in meditation.

Also Read: Yogic Identity: How Practice Changes the Way You See Yourself

Emotional release occurs when it is time on the mat, and our reaction to it is what can make a difference. Here are some loving ways to lead our way through the moment:

What to Do

Why It Helps

Welcome the Tears

Resisting or fighting tears creates internal tension. Let them flow freely without trying to stop them.

Place a Hand on Your Heart

Physical self-touch releases oxytocin (the comfort hormone) and signals safety to your nervous system.

Focus on Your Exhale

Lengthening your exhale helps keep your body grounded so you don’t feel swept away by emotions.

Pause if Overwhelmed

If feelings get too intense, gently open your eyes, feel the floor beneath you, or sip some water.

The way children look on while crying.

It is very common for society to teach us that crying is weak or to hide what it is. However, tears are considered a sacred fluid within the realm of holistic wellness and self-care.

Tears can be seen as an emotional wash down. After exercise, sweating cools and cleanses the body; crying cleanses the heart and mind. In fact, the tear fluid is so crystalline that it contains stress hormones, so when we cry, we are actually literally washing stress out of our physical systems!

The next time your tears start to flow while meditating, don’t immediately try to analyze them. It is not necessary to attempt to discover all of the reasons that you are crying. Just tell your body, “Thank you for trusting me enough to release your emotions.”

When setting up your home practice area, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Establishing a supportive environment can greatly help if you want to feel more comfortable going through emotional breakthroughs while you’re practicing:

Soft Lighting: Dim lights or candles let the brain know it’s time to relax and just release or remove all the stress we are carrying.

Have Comfort Items on Hand: Have a warm blanket, a bolster or firm cushion, and a box of tissues beside your mat.

Ground Yourself Afterwards: Take 5 minutes to “ground” yourself after the deep emotional release. Drink a warm herbal tea, write it down in a journal, or take a leisurely stroll in nature.

Closing Remarks: Let the healing take place within

Whether you are practicing alone at home or exploring meditation through a structured yoga experience, the goal is the same: to create space for greater awareness and self-understanding. Maa Shakti Yog Bali is rooted in this idea of approaching yoga as a journey that goes beyond physical postures.

We give ourselves a priceless gift each time we are seated on the cushion or on the mat in that we are allowed to be completely honest with ourselves.

During your meditation session, if you cry, then wear it as a badge of honor. They’re a testament to the fact that you’re working on the hard stuff, uncovering layers of stress, and letting yourself heal.

Honor our tears, honor our practice, and trust the journey. We’re all on that journey of self-discovery, one breath and sometimes one tear at a time.

A Gentle Reminder: It is common to cry when meditating, as it is a natural process of the mind, but at times, when the mind becomes constantly affected by deep emotional pain or trauma, it may be wise to consult a licensed mental health worker or counselor. Mindfulness can work alongside professional therapy to provide tremendous support for deeper emotional healing.

Crying during meditation can feel
