Finding Your Center in the Tropics: The Rise of Yoga Destinations in Southeast Asia
Hey, all the beautiful souls! Sit with us on the cushion and sip on a herbal tea.
Ever felt that itchy, itchy need to just… relax? Not just a lazy Sunday, but a soulful reset where your only plans are to think about your breath? If you are on Instagram (we all are), then you may have noticed all those gorgeous shots of yogis in flow on the backdrop of green rice paddies or white sand beaches (some of which you can find on our page as well).
It’s no coincidence. We are teachers, and over the past couple of years we have seen a shift in the “yoga map.” Although yoga will always have its roots in the hallowed ground of India, there is now a very contemporary spirit in Southeast Asia. From the sacred mountains of Northern Thailand to the spiritual haven of Bali, this corner of the world has become a haven for practitioners around the world.
Today, we just wanted to share a little trip to some of these yoga hotspots of Southeast Asia. Whether you’re just starting out or are an established teacher, let’s take a look at why this is the place to want to come back home to our mats.
Why Southeast Asia? The “Prana” of the Tropics
Let’s explore why before we explore where. So what is it about a yoga retreat in Southeast Asia that makes it more than just a holiday?
For us, as teachers, our surroundings reflect our practice. Back in the West, we have mirrored walls and traffic noises. It works, but it’s hard. In Southeast Asia, nature helps us to practice. Muscles are more malleable because of the humidity. The prana (life-force energy) in the jungles is strong. At Maa Shakti Yog Bali, this is exactly why we guide students toward immersive yoga experiences in spiritually rich destinations.
And think about wellness tourism. In Asia (Thailand and Indonesia), hospitality is a religion. A world-class yoga teacher training (YTT) program, affordable luxury, delicious vegetarian food, and a culture that lives and breathes mindfulness: this is the recipe for transformation.
1. Bali, Indonesia: Island of the Gods
When you think of yoga in Asia, think Bali and Ubud. Described as the island’s spiritual center, Ubud is a place where one can smell incense and frangipani.
- Vibe: High-vibe, community-centered, and spiritual.
- Best For: Yoga teacher training, sound healing, and “Eat Pray “Love”-style soul-searching.
- Hot Spots: The Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive are legendary, but don’t miss the small retreats in Canggu for a surf and soul combination.
Yoga in Bali is not only a physical practice but also part of the Balinese Hindu “Tri Hita Karana”—balance with humans, nature, and the gods. It’s a ritual experience.
2. Thailand: Mountains and Islands

Thailand is probably the most flexible of our countries. It’s the best of both worlds for those looking for a spa treatment with arms wide open.
Koh Phangan is famous for “Full Moon” parties, but the north part of the island (Sri Thanu) is a global center for tantra yoga, healing, and veganism.
- Chiang Mai: It’s in the mountains. This is the home of “slow living”—great for meditation retreats and yin yoga.
- Koh Samui: The home of some of the most deluxe spas, such as Kamalaya, where you can do Hatha poses and Thai massages.
3. Vietnam: The New Kid on the Block
But if you’re after a little more “underground,” watch out for Vietnam. They are fast emerging as wellness destinations with towns like Da Nang and Hoi An.
Vietnam has a unique Zen Buddhist culture combined with breathtaking nature. Think of sun salutations as the sun rises on the Marble Mountains or the blue waters of Ninh Van Bay. It’s calm, authentic, and soothing.
4. Philippines: Nature is the New Medicine
Yoga in the Philippines is the “new kid on the block,” but it has made a big splash. The Farm at San Benito is a top-notch resort that offers “medical wellness”—yoga, cellular health, and a detox. For those looking for more adventure, the eco-resorts of Siargao and El Nido are the place to be, with yoga shalas overlooking the ocean.
The Benefits of a Yoga Trip to Southeast Asia
If you are still not convinced about taking the trip, here are just a couple of reasons why our students always return with a “yoga glow” for weeks on end:
- Great Detoxification: The warm environment will promote perspiration, which in turn will detoxify you. Add in the fresh dragon fruit, mangoes, and young coconuts, and you’re detoxified.
- Cultural Immersion: You’re not just learning yoga poses; you’re learning a culture. Seeing a daily prayer in Bali or a monk’s alms in Thailand gives you a greater understanding of mindfulness than a textbook ever could.
- Value: You can enjoy a deluxe, all-inclusive yoga retreat in Southeast Asia for a fraction of the cost of Europe or the US. This means you can spend more time and immerse yourself.
- Top-Notch Teachers: These regions are center points, which means they draw the best teachers from all over. One class you may be with a master of Ashtanga, and the next day with a renowned teacher of yoga nidra.
Tips for Planning Your Yoga Journey
As your tour guides, we like to make the journey as smooth as possible. Here are some of our “pro-tips” from all the time we’ve spent on mats overseas:
- The Green Season (aka monsoons). It can be super cute and economical to practice yoga in the rain, but check the weather for the month you are arriving. In Bali, April-October is ideal; in the islands of Thailand, January-April are ideal.
- Pack Lighter: You really only need a handful of breathable leggings, a reusable water container, and a light shawl for mindfulness practice. Most retreat facilities supply high-quality matting and props to accommodate their guests.
- Be Culturally Respectful: Keep in mind that these nations have a great deal of religious significance; therefore, when visiting temples outside the yoga studio, you should always make sure your shoulders and knees are covered.
- Formulate an Intention: Before you set off on your journey, take the time to think about what you are searching for. Do you want physical strength, mental clarity, or healing after breaking up with someone or changing careers?
Southeast Asia has a knack for giving people what they are genuinely looking for or need; it just helps to ask before going!

The growth of yoga centers throughout Southeast Asia is not only a travel trend but is also a reaction to the fast-paced, highly stressed lifestyle that permeates most of our lives today. There are many people searching for places they can set their phones down, unroll their mats, and fulfill what they feel they have lost by being “busy.”
Whether you end up practicing in a bamboo shala in Bali or at a beachfront resort in the Philippines, the beauty of this area is how it has the ability to lower one’s heart rate while also opening one’s heart.
What are you thinking? Will you finally get your practice out of the country in 2026? Getting to see the evening light from a yogic position on a beautiful beach in another country would be a great experience.
Wishing everyone safe travels and good luck in their travels!
