Mastering Teaching Methodology: How We Prepare Future Yoga Teachers in Bali

Hello all Yogis!

Do you ever get that feeling in Savasana, that little awareness that yoga has become more than poses to you? Maybe that is the same feeling you get when there is a sense of peace and clarity on your mat that you are wanting to share with others. That little sparkle, that little push—that may be the teacher within you that is preparing to sprout once it gets the right sun and water.

And where could that be given better nourishment than in the center of Bali, Indonesia? The energy and connectedness of this island has the ability to take your intentions to the next level. Something in the air, something that vibrates with possibility, makes it an incredible environment to undertake the journey of training to be a yoga teacher.

Here at Bali, we believe that to become a yoga teacher is so much more than simply learning the asanas. It’s about embodying yoga, understanding ancient teachings, and allowing that comprehension to blossom within. The most original way to teach yoga is to teach from an authentic place of experience and connection. So if there is a whisper calling you, you are in a great place to answer that call.

The Unfolding Lotus: Our Petal-by-Petal Approach to Teacher Training

Imagine our 200-hour yoga teacher training course here in Bali as a delicately blooming lotus flower. Each step and element of our program gently unfold to reveal the radiant whole teacher already inside of you. It’s a process, not a race.

Let’s take a sneak peek into a few of these ‘petals’:

  • The Roots of Wisdom: We will plumb the depths of the heart of yoga philosophy—and it won’t be dusty; you won’t just be reading old books. There is no shortage of wisdom, but rather exploring how these ancient teachings can apply to your own life and how it all gets to inform your teaching. We will seriously investigate the Yoga Sutras and other wisdom traditions as to be relevant and inspiring to you, and the result is that you leave with a firm foundation for authentic yoga teaching that is expandable beyond just the movement.
  • The Anatomy of Awareness: You know your body is unique, and so is your experience of a pose? We feel that understanding the ‘why’ of the ‘how’ is also vital to a teacher. We will directly explore functional anatomy for yoga so that you learn what promotes safety and effectiveness in guiding students, assisting them, and offering variations and modifications that genuinely serve their own unique needs. We will also explore the energetic body and ideas like prana in order to make it actionable and practical.
  • The Communication Art: Being a great teacher is more than knowing the poses; it is about being able to share those poses in a way that resonates. We will investigate the art of intelligent sequencing, which is how to create classes that flow and build upon each other in an intentional way. You will discover how to establish clear and inclusive language, and we will explore the subtleties of hands-on adjustments with a focus on ethics and consent.

The Balinese Embrace: Immersed in Culture, Grounded in Spirit

Now picture learning all of this in Bali. It is not just a gorgeous setting; Bali adds a layer of its own character to our residential yoga teacher training program. Consider the daily offerings, the sounds of gamelan music, and the profound respect for tradition; all of these factors contribute to an incredible atmosphere for learning.

We believe learning about the local culture is an important and valuable experience during your training. Frequently we include elements of Balinese wisdom into the training, such as learning about local healing techniques, the value of certain ceremonies, or even experiencing the authentic kindness of the Balinese people.

In addition to the community found within the classroom, there is a real community growing in our training group. Having this experience, intense as it is, within a supportive environment leads to friendships that often extend well beyond the course. And in Bali, you can’t help but resonate with a different pace of life and a greater sense of presence that enhances the inner landscape of yoga. The immersion assembles our yoga instructor course in Bali.

From Bud to Blossom: The Journey of Practice Teaching

The philosophy and anatomy knowledge you have starts to really flourish once you start putting it into practice. We approach practice teaching to build your confidence while you are discovering your voice as a teacher through the process of positive progressions.

You begin as a wee bud, perhaps a bit timid, becoming a flourishing blossom with careful, gentle guidance & practice. We start by providing a supportive group context, giving you opportunities to explore and get feedback in an intentional and safe space. Then, we support you personally with our talented, experienced teaching guides as you create your cueing and sequencing development beyond your overall presence and confidence as a teacher.

This isn’t rigid perfection—it’s about finding your own way of teaching—how you bond with and guide students. We encourage you to seek out different ways of connecting with your students and find what feels true to the best self of you. We also prepare you for the world of teaching, looking at all of the variations in how we teach and how to adjust to different levels of students. – It could be yoga teachers who have several years of experience or those who have never taken a class. This is the experiential component of our yoga teacher training, an immersive experience at the retreat, so you will walk away able to lead.

Nurturing the Roots: Ongoing Support and Community Beyond Graduation

Your relationship with us doesn’t end once you receive your certification. We see your trajectory of becoming a yoga teacher to be ongoing, and we will continue to nurture those roots long after you’ve departed from Bali.

Upon completing our international yoga certification course, you become a part of our alumni network of many others. It is a passionate community of fellow teachers from around the world (you will have many opportunities to connect with people from around the globe; Soaya is well wired and connected) and provides a wonderful opportunity for continued conversation, support, and sharing.

We will also do our best to provide ongoing resources and mentorship for our graduates. Whether that be with our exclusive workshops, access to online forums for asking questions, knowing you have a community to lean upon, or simply finding encouragement from the very fact that there is a community, we want you to feel empowered and connected as you step onto your teaching path. We believe, therefore, that engagement with a strong community is an essential ingredient to growth and longevity as a yoga teacher.
