An Introduction to Pranayama: The Art of Breathing at Maa Shakti Yog

Hi, yogi!

Ever wonder why your breath becomes rapid and shallow during stressful times? Or has a calming deep breath brought relief to your distressed nerves? Well, that is where the magic of Pranayama, the ancient art of conscious breathing, comes into play.

At Maa Shakti Yog, we believe that pranayama is not just a breathing exercise; it can also be a powerful tool in transforming one’s mind, body, and spirit. It involves harnessing life energy within and directing it toward a healthier, happier you.

In this session, we will dive into the world of Pranayama and witness the secrets of this ancient practice. We will see the different types of pranayama; we will see how science backs that up, and closely and most importantly, how we can incorporate this into our everyday lives.

Are you ready to engage in this whole journey of breathing? Let’s go through it!

The Science Behind Breath: A Deeper Dive

Let’s get a little scientific, shall we?

Breathing may seem to be just inhalation and exhalation, but there is much more to it than this. They represent a very complex cooperation of muscles, nerves, and organs working perfectly.

The Mechanics of Breathing.

At the core of this mechanism is your diaphragm—a dome-shaped muscle beneath your lungs. As soon as inhalation occurs, the diaphragm contracts to move downwards and opens up some space for the lungs’ expansion. This expansion fills the lungs with oxygen.

With exhalation, the diaphragm subsequently relaxes to push out the air from the lungs. This is a very simple but essential mechanical process for the sustenance of life; it gives the body the oxygen it needs to exist.

The Connection Between Mind and Breath.

Breathing is not only physically involved; it’s deeply rooted in the mental and emotional. Breathing influences your mood, energy, and sense of well-being.

For example, rapid and shallow breathing typically results from anxiety or stress and can lead to panic or overwhelming feelings. Conversely, slow, deep breathing can calm the nervous system and allow some relaxation and de-stressing.

That’s why it is always advised to take a deep breath in case of any discomfort or any issue if you go with your inner self or feel any way stressed.

The Force of Life: Prana.

In the ancient yogic philosophy, the life force energy that makes existence in all living beings is termed prana. This subtle energy is believed to flow through our bodies and nurture our cells and organs.

It is thought that prana primarily travels through breath. Modifying your breathing gradually affects the flow of prana to your body for improved health and vitality because breath is a channel for prana.

A Symphony of Breath: Exploring Different Pranayama Techniques

Having looked into the science behind breath, let us now get deeper into one or two types of pranayama that one can learn and implement to transform the whole experience of life.

Anuloma Viloma: The Balancing Breath

Picture a saw-like seesaw swaying from side to side, bringing about equilibrium and balance. This is what Anuloma Viloma does for your mind and body; by breathing through alternate nostrils, it calms the nervous system and clears the mind.

How to do it:

  • Close your right nostril: Use your right thumb to gently close your right nostril.
  • Inhale through your left nostril: This is to be done deeply and slowly.
  • Exhale through your right nostril: Close your left nostril with your ring finger and exhale out slowly through your right nostril.
  • Inhale through your right nostril: Inhale slowly through your right nostril.
  • Exhale through your left nostril: Now, close your right nostril and exhale slowly through your left nostril.

Repeat this cycle between 5-10 minutes.

Bhramari Pranayama: The Humming Bee Breath

Imagine the gentle hum of a bee. This soft sound creates a very powerful calming effect on your mind and body. Bhramari Pranayama is where you create this humming sound while exhaling, thus giving relaxation to the mind and a mental release from stress.

How to do this:

  • Keep your eyes closed for some time and let out one long breath as you do so.
  • After you inhale deeply, create a soft humming sound as you exhale so it sounds like a bee.

Repeat this step over a period of 5 to 10 minutes.

Kapalbhati Pranayama: The Skull Shining Breath

This amazing breathing technique can fill your body and mind with life. It consists of some very quick and forceful exhalations with some very passive inhalations, respectively.

Warning: It is highly recommended that you practice this technique under the direct guidance of a qualified yoga teacher, especially for beginners.

Ujjayi Pranayama: The Victorious Breath

Ujjayi Pranayama involves making a soft hissing noise while inhaling and exhaling. This technique calms the mind, enhances concentration, and deepens the meditation.

How to do it:

  • Inhale slowly: As you inhale, a slight constriction is to be made at the back of your throat, creating a soft hissing noise.
  • Exhale slowly: Exhale slowly while maintaining the same hissing noise.
  • 5-10 minutes: Continue doing this for 5-10 minutes.

Remember that more than practice is about the habit. The more you practice these techniques, the better their effect. It would be prudent to have a qualified yoga teacher when you begin pranayama.
