Sun, Sand, and Savasana: Why Island Destinations Are Emerging Hotspots for Yoga Retreats
Take your favorite herbal tea, have a deep breath, and let us talk some now.
You must be feeling it, we guess, if you are anything like the students we see in our retreat week after week. The grind. The endless notifications. The pressure to be “on” 24/7. The reason behind our unrolling of mats is a hope of at least an hour of free time, but sometimes even Savasana is on the list of things to do before scurrying back into reality.
We have been yoga instructors for more than a decade, and we have seen how the trends have changed. We would do the weekend urban workshop contentedly. However, in recent years, we have observed a tremendous shift. Each and every one is longing to have something more, something more engaging. They are not seeking a course; they are seeking a way out.
That is precisely the reason why the island destinations are clearly emerging as the unquestioned yoga retreat hotspots. This is exactly what we’ve witnessed through the retreats we host at Maa Shakti Yog Bali—people aren’t just traveling, they’re stepping out of their old nervous systems.
It is not only about attaining a tan during Warrior II (a bonus indeed!). Something deeply restorative, more or less magical, is the process of performing yoga on the water. It transforms the whole container of the retreat experience.
In case you have been scrolling Instagram viewing wellness travel opportunities and are getting the urge to go to the turquoise waters, then listen to that feeling. This is our opinion as to why sending away to an island may just be the tonic your soul requires this moment.
The Ultimate Pattern Interrupt.
Honestly speaking, it is difficult not to be connected when you can get to your office within an hour. Your mind is aware that you are still attached to your duty.
Islands are defined as separate. It is a psychological change when you take the plane or a ferry and leave the mainland. You are literally distancing yourself and your stressors.
Our students also change when we take them through retreats on islands, and we notice the difference almost instantly. There are two-inch drops in their shoulders. Their breathing deepens. This very action of crossing the water creates a huge pattern interrupt to the nervous system. You are not going on vacation; you are entering a special place of healing. This physical distance renders the mental distance that is necessary in practicing deep mindfulness infinitely easier.
Nature as the Supreme Cure.

We spend our lives away in the indoor environment, where we are subjected to fluorescent lighting and recycle the air we breathe. Yoga teaches us that we are not distinct and apart, and yet, we are so terribly out of touch with nature.
Island yoga retreats are the sensory experience that you will never encounter in an urban studio.
Think about it. You have a Spotify playlist, but your music is the rhythmic clashing of ocean waves, your breath a metronome. You are not looking at a wall that is not there but are looking at the endless horizon of the blue sky and the sea with the reminder of endless possibilities.
The elements are right there. Sun rays will assist in relaxing tight muscles, and one will find it easier to sink deeper into asanas. The sea air is quite inviting to inhale when performing pranayama (breathwork). This unceasing contact with nature enhances the effects of the practice. You are not simply doing yoga but doing it in the most natural place where it is practiced.
Beach Yoga: An Embarrassing New Experience.
When you are accustomed to a completely even, sticky studio floor, then you wait to do your beach yoga. It is an entirely new game, seekers!
It is humiliating to practice on the sand. It is lumpy, it slips under your feet, and, yes, you most likely are going to get sand in places where you did not even know sand was there. But we do like what the sand is teaching us as teachers.
It is much more difficult to pose like a tree or an eagle when the ground is not even. It makes you work the stabilizing muscles differently. More to the point, it also trains you to accept being imperfect. You will wobble. You might fall over laughing. And that’s the point.
Island getaways incite us to abandon the desire to perceive the ideals of the so-called perfect pose and be happy during the process. Besides, handstands are much softer when you fall on a sandy floor than on a hardwood floor!

We are in a society that is obsessive about productivity and speed. Societies of the island, in general, work on another frequency. They adopt an alternative time, island time, which is a slower and purposeful way of life.
Such a slow rhythm is utterly helpful to a wellness experience that is holistic. When you are on a tropical vacation, the hurry disappears. You are advised to languish over your nutritious breakfast, to stroll slowly along the water, and to just exist.
The magic actually occurs in this slack-down in our case. And at the moment when we quit rushing, our nervous systems eventually go out of the fight or flight mode and into the rest and digest mode. It is the condition where subtle and great healing takes place physically and emotionally. A week of island living may be more refreshing than a month of sleep at home.
A holistic approach to wellness.
Lastly, the most desirable yoga places on islands do not only include two yoga sessions every day. They provide an all-inclusive adventure.
Yoga is a matter of integration—union of mind, body, and spirit. This is inherent in island retreats, which provide complementary activities that feed you in various ways.
Perhaps it is snorkeling in clear waters, the wonder of colorful sea creatures. Perhaps it is a quiet climb to a volcanic trail to see the sunrise. Or maybe it is just getting a massage in a palapa in an open-air setting with the sound of the ocean.
These experiences, along with daily yoga and meditation, will make a well-rounded retreat, which will restore all of your batteries. You walk away, feeling good in your body, clear in your head, and completely refreshed in your heart.
The Final Savasana
We understand that it may seem a huge investment of time and money to make a reservation for a retreat. However, we can also tell what the eyes of my students look like after coming back with one. They return radiant and down-to-earth and have an air of calmness that is difficult to disturb.
The ocean offers a powerful means of connecting—and the ability to gain insight into your life by combining the two elements of ocean (yoga) and nature (yoga) creates a transformative experience for many people.
There are times when we simply need to create physical distance from our lives before we can truly let go and gain a new view of our current circumstances through a newfound clarity.
We send blessings to you, and we hope that we will see each other on a beach soon.
